Horst “Jim” Mueller

Jim Mueller (2nd from left in picture) is part of the original group that formed the NAMI Charleston Area chapter. He is a long time Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center Board member and currently serves as treasurer of the board. He is a true advocate and an incredible volunteer at the young age of 90.

In the mid to late ‘60s the Mueller family, Jim and his wife Jessie were visiting their son, Jimmy in the state hospital. They met four other families from the Charleston area who also had a son in the state hospital. The five families banded together with the intent of bettering the lives of people with mental illness. The Muellers worked diligently on their mission, which led to creation of NAMI Charleston Area.

Jim has been a true advocate for people with mental illness and is still attending family support meetings and educational meetings.

Jim and Jessie’s son, Jimmy passed away in 2010. Their final wishes for him were for any contributions to be made to NAMI Charleston Area. These contributions have been instrumental in providing entertainment and socialization for clients at the Dorchester clinic.

NAMI Charleston and the SC Department of Mental Health would like to congratulate him on this fine achievement and thank him for all his incredible contributions!
