Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

What is PCIT?

  • A dynamic, evidence based program that provides parents with effective skills for managing and improving their child’s behavior.
  • A family centered treatment approach
  • A program that helps improve relationships between parents and their children

 

Who can PCIT help?

  • Children ages 2-7
  • Children with disruptive behavior disorders including ADHD
  • Children affected by abuse/neglect
  • Children who are or have been in foster care
  • Children recently adopted or in preadoptive placements

 

What does treatment look like?

  • Parent and child are together during sessions
  • A specially trained therapist coaches parents, helping them learn and practice skills from behind a one way mirror
  • Weekly sessions for about 12 to 14 weeks
  • Parents/caregivers practice skills at home each week.
